DESCRIPTION OF PLAYS
Fall show: Dreams
(Rehearses and performs Sept. 2012 – Jan. 2013)
Dreams is based on kid-written stories and poems. The child authors imagine a world where there are pet tigers, and vending machines that dispense food for the homeless. Dreams dramatizes the stories of kids’ dreams for themselves, their families, and the world. These sometimes moving, sometimes funny, stories and songs were written by young people ages 6-12 from various cultural backgrounds. The child authors lived in Colorado, but some were from different countries. There are also stories by kids who were homeless and one from a girl in a wheelchair.
Winter/Spring show: The Journal of Abby Munson
(Rehearses and performs Jan. – May 2013)
This play was written in a residency with a fifth grade class at Pioneer Elementary. The story begins after fifth-grader Abby Munson’s 10th time in the principal’s office. Her teacher instructs her to start a journal to get some of her anger out on paper, instead of on the other kids. At first, this task seems like a useless chore, but in time Abby finds herself craving the opportunity to write. It becomes an escape from her daily hardships; her mom has left the family, so she lives with her dad in a house overrun with mice. At school, she is classified as an undesirable geek and spends her recesses alone. When she begins her journal, it is full of feelings of anger, frustration, and loneliness. But soon she uncovers a hidden gift – a passion for writing! When her teacher compels her to share some of her stories with the class, her peers recognize that she is not only talented, but also funny! Abby finds a sense of belonging and discovers that her ability to “be herself” is her most valuable quality.
