Shakespeare for elementary school students?
Yes—but this is not your average Shakespeare play!

The Merchant of Venice has been re-written by 4th and 5th graders in order to make it relevant and accessible for elementary school-aged audiences.  The students’ writing breathes new life into the story while maintaining the original plot and flavor of Shakespeare’s language.

The play, entitled Give It Up, deals with themes of revenge and forgiveness, issues that young people regularly face.  The story starts with Shylock, who is relentlessly ridiculed by Antonio.  Shylock plans revenge against Antonio.  When the plan backfires, Antonio ends up in a position to punish Shylock, but instead decides to forgive him.

With wit and insight, the story provides a model for how to make the difficult choice to end the cycle of vengeance.  The young voice and fresh perspective ensure that there are also lots of laughs in this powerful play.

Have you ever played in a football game where you ran the wrong way with the ball, slipped and had your shoe come off, and tackled your own teammate?  One boy’s goodhearted look at his misadventures is among the 13 true stories and six songs that make up this evening of stories written by kids of different racial, socioeconomic and geographic backgrounds, performed by 3 professional adult actors and 1 musician.  The play includes amusing tales of snowboarding and an adventurous Halloween night, as well as more serious stories of a girl living in a homeless shelter and one who became disabled from a bout with cancer.  Two are presented using both English and Spanish.
